Reports: French state investment fund withdraws investment in Renault EV battery plant; loan not to be granted

La Tribune. The French Strategic Investment Fund (ISF) will not invest €125 million (US$178 million) in Renault’s EV battery plant in Flins, French media reports. In addition, a €100 million public loan will no longer be granted.

France owns 15% of Renault, which is investing €4 billion with alliance partner Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. in its electric-vehicle program.

Coulomb Technologies introduced its latest ChargePoint smart phone app, for Android smart phones. Now available for free in the Android Market for the US, the ChargePoint App joins Coulomb’s mobile app product family, which includes apps for the Blackberry and iPhone.

Coulomb’s ChargePoint apps give electric vehicle (EV) drivers real-time charging station status, reservations, location information and navigation.

Battery-electric Mitsubishi i EPA-rated at 112 MPGe combined, 62 mile real-world range; solar-powered CHAdeMO-compliant charging station

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., (MMNA) said that its battery-electric Mitsubishi i has earned an EPA-rated 126 MPGe in city driving and 99 MPGe out on the highway (112 MPGe combined). EPA pegged the “real-world” driving range at 62 miles.

Axeon awarded funding to study recycling and re-use of EV batteries

UK-based Li-ion battery system producer Axeon is one of six British companies to receive a share of nearly £500,000 (US$798,000) in funding from the Technology Strategy Board for feasibility studies into the recycling and re-use of batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. As well as researching the recycling process, the project will look at how to determine end-of-life.

Liquid Metal Battery Corporation (LMBC), a Cambridge, Massachusetts company founded in 2010 to develop new forms of electric storage batteries that work in large, grid-scale applications, has secured the rights to key patent technology from MIT.

BASF intensifying R & D of products for sustainable electromobility; triple-digit million euro investment in batteries over next 5 years

BASF says it will invest a “three-digit million euro” sum over the next five years in the research, development and production of advanced traction battery materials. Part of the investment is going to the construction of a new cathode materials plant in Elyria, Ohio. This new facility with an investment volume of more than $50 million is scheduled to supply the market with cathode materials for the production of high-performance lithium-ion batteries from mid-2012.
