Nissan to test NV200 electric van in Japan
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Japan
Nissan has announced that it will begin testing an electrified version of the compact NV200 van in Japan by the end of July. For the first phase of testing, the Japan Post Service will use one battery-powered NV200 for postal collection and delivery tasks for approximately two months in the city of Yokohama, Japan. The goal of the initial phase is to evaluate the vehicle's capabilities in real-world conditions. Later, similar tests will be conducted in other cities in Japan and Europe.
If you recall, New York City's Taxi and Limousine Commissions recently awarded Nissan a ten-year contract after the automaker's gasoline-powered NV200 won a shootout, becoming New York City's "Taxi of Tomorrow." Aside from that, the NV200 was awarded "International Van of the Year 2010" in late 2009 and "Universal Design Award" in March 2011.
The NV200 launched in Japan and Europe back in 2009 and arrived in China and Singapore in 2010. Though Nissan has not yet specified a date, the gas-powered NV200 will eventually hit dealer lots in the U.S.
